The SPE President, Shauna Noonan, notified me last week that I am the recipient of the 2020 SPE International Health, Safety and Environment Award to be presented at the Annual Technical Meeting in Houston in October.
The Award results principally from my work on the introduction of human and organizational factors concepts into drilling operations through organising SPE events, presenting papers at Drilling Conferences and operationalizing human factors principles into the way that drilling teams prepare for and carry out their operations. In addition, earlier work on the application of risk assessment methods to a broad range of well engineering technical problems was also recognized.
This award would not have been possible but for the longstanding (and patient) teaching, support and collaboration with Dr Margaret Crichton of People Factor Consultants Ltd who was sadly taken from us in September 2018. I thank the SPE President, Board of Directors and the HSE&S discipline Awards Committee for this recognition.
